The Donkey That Makes Us All Shine

I know of a donkey
That makes us all shine
Dedicated, committed and determined
Doing all the donkey work
The kind we all want to avoid
The kind that is heavy and cumbersome
Getting its hands dirty and messy
Carrying heavy loads and burdens
Going the extra mile far and wide
Making it easier and better for us all.

I know of a donkey

That makes us all shine
Serving, loving and caring
Being there in more ways than one
Doing all the donkey work
The kind that is badly remunerated
Leaving it drained and exhausted
Ever dusty, rugged and strained
Making our work easier and less tedious.

I know of a donkey
That Makes us all shine
But someone foolish once said
Asante ya punda ni mateke
And so everyone is ever kicking it
This donkey that makes us all shine
And in protest at times it kicks too
But who wouldn’t kick back in protest
Wondering when will this unending sacrifice end?
When will this straining back be allowed to unbend?
When will this domestic animal be permitted to wend?
And be something more than just a donkey.

I know of a donkey
That Makes us all shine
And in moments of need and despair
The donkey wonders and gets pained
“Why can’t I be like a horse,
Galloping around and looking pretty?
Why can’t I be like a zebra,
Lazing around and getting admired?
Why can’t I be like a cow,
Pampered, revered and well taken care of?
Why can’t I be allowed to be a decent animal?
Not the dirty and the burdened one
Why the beast of burdens and not the beauty of care?
Don’t I care for everyone?”

I know of a donkey
That Makes us all shine
And I want to say to you
Words that no one else has ever uttered
You were born a donkey, be contented
Who knows? In the next life,
You could be the master.
You were born a donkey, you are special,
No one else has a back like yours
To carry the tonnes you do
And remain intact and contained
None has the kind of your strength
The kind of your power
The kind of your steel care

And when no one sees the good in you
Do not cease to be who you are
And when they expect more than they deserve
Do not resist to give your very best
When they push you and demand beyond
Do not desire to be another animal
For we cannot all be zebras or horses
Somebody somewhere has to be a donkey
And this time round,
That donkey is you.
The donkey that makes us all shine.

Why Happy?

In every other special
Occasion
Words are uttered
Desires are expressed
Wishes are made
Source: Google Image Search

Happy New Year!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Anniversary!
Happy Ending!
Happy Ever After!
Happy Holidays!

Why happy?

Because happy is
Sharing
Experiencing
Living
And being.

Why happy?

Because happy
Happy keeps you younger
Happy keeps you moving
Happy heals the bones
Happy is your soul's tone.

Are you happy?

Have a happy You!

One Breath

Why do we have
Them and us?

Why do we have
The fragmentation,
The separation,
The segregation
Source: google image
The classification
The walls and
The distance?

Aint we just
But one breath?

The air that passes
Through your nose
Into your lungs
Out of your nose
At some point
Passes again
Through my nose
Into my lungs
Out of my nose
Then again passes
Through others noses
Into their lungs
And then,
Out of their noses.

Aint we just
But one breath?

We all live
On this one air
On this one breath
In through Out

We are
But the air we breathe
We are
But one breath
The breath of God.

But Don't

You probably don’t know me,
I also don’t know you.
I am Tamar. I am beautiful.
Everything in life,
Seems to be working out for me.
I am married to a prestigious family,
To a truly handsome dude
Disobedience led to his demise,
When his brother played with my psychology
Twice A widow
And a third promise to be married
Never materialised
Shsh…….don’t
Don’t be quick to write me off
I was blessed with a twin
Perez and Zeran.
Gen 38

You probably have heard of my fame
In the gutter press
The shadow of my bad actions
Shines brighter
Than the light of my good ones
I am Rahab,
The harlot who dared to believe in the God of Israel
Did one action outside my line of duty,
Changing my present and future
I know my past isn’t pretty
But don’t.
Don’t be quick to dismiss me
Am in the hall of fame with great men and women.
Joshua 2,Heb 11:31, John 20:29

You probably pity me
Feeling sorry for me,
My plans backfired
I was to be married,
Get children
Live happily ever after
But dreams sometimes don’t come true,
I am Ruth.
Alone with a mother in greater pain
Had to rise above my pain and sorrow
For my mother’s sake and for my sanity
You wish I wallowed in my problems,
Since people will understand
But Don’t
Don’t magnify my problem and tribulation
Exalt my God who has good plans for me.
(Book of Ruth)

I was one of the many wives of the king of Israel
Your thoughts convinced you that I had my husband killed
I mourned a husband and a child
For being at the wrong place
In the wrong time
My troubles were many
So were my triumphs and victories
If you were given a choice
I wouldn’t be queen
I am Bathsheba.
But don’t
Don’t overlook me
My son Solomon would be king over Israel
The wisest man on earth
2 Samuel 11

You probably would not choose yourself
If you were looking for a champion
You are convinced that you fall short
And don’t have what it takes
The past and present
Don’t look like the story of an overcomer
The mirror shows all your flaws
And your heart knows
That you are not at all brave
Wishing daily you were someone else,
From a different family, country and creed
But don’t
Don’t end the story prematurely,

The writer is still on this particular story.
